A High Speed Three Dimensional Inspection Of Cylindrical Objects

In many production processes involving cylindrical objects examination of the whole of the surface including the ends is required. In most cases the production rates are high and the inspection needs to be carried out at high speeds. A technique developed by IVP for the inspection of corks can be equally applied to many other samples.

It is possible to use one IVP Ranger smart camera as a 3D camera and a multiple line scan camera. A laser is used with line generation optics which extend the beam beyond the edges of the cork. Using laser triangulation the main cylindrical surface is examining in 3D as the cork rotates. The ends of the cork are illuminated via 45º mirrors and the camera is switched to line scan mode and inspects the ends. The IVP Ranger can record up to 10,000 images per second and 3D profiles can be produced at the very high speed needed for production line inspection.
