SavvyInspector Series - Scratch/Dig Measurement for Flat Optics MIL-PRF-13830B
The inspection stations from Savvy Optics allow an objective measurement of scratch and dig visibility. They are available in manual or motorised configurations with various XY stage options. The motorised systems can be automated for “Autoscan” measurement scanning and automatic reporting.
Objective measurement of scratch and dig visibility
The inspection stations from Savvy Optics allows an objective measurement of scratch and dig visibility. Available in multiple configurations, including manual, motorised, and with large XY stages.
The SavvyInspector™ provides software assisted scratch/dig evaluation of flat optical surfaces, eliminating the subjectivity of human surface quality inspection. The instrument is designed specifically to reproduce the conditions of an in-reflection visual inspection described in Appendix C of MIL-PRF-13830B, “General specification governing the manufacture, assembly, and inspection of optical components for fire control instruments.” The factory calibrated inspection head of the SavvyInspector™ uses invariant illumination and detection optics and propriety analysis software, allowing objective, repeatable and recordable evaluation of scratch/dig surface quality.

Product Description
SavvyInspector™ is a complete flat-optics inspection system consisting of:
- A custom LED-based illumination assembly,
- A detection assembly with lensing and a digital high-resolution camera,
- A manual or motorised z-stage for focusing to different part thicknesses,
- A manual or motorised x-y stage platform with rails for part holding and positioning,
- Light baffles, base-stand assembly, and cabling,
- A stand-alone computer with propriety SavvyInspector™ analysis software.
The SavvyInspector™ SIF-4 has a 0.5 megapixel camera for standard surface imperfection measurements on flat optics such as windows, filters, mirrors, gratings, and prisms. ISO mode is supported to a grade 0.063 or larger for general and coating imperfections. It has a manual z-stage and manual, encoded x-y stage platform with 100mm x 100mm travel. It has been discontinued and has been replaced by the SIF-4E. Lambda Photometrics still has this system available as a demo unit.
The SavvyInspector™ SIF-4E uses a 1.4 megapixel camera and higher resolution to perform more precise measurements and grading on very small features. It is recommended for micro-optics, and for components that are specified to 20-10 or tighter. It also has a manual z-stage and manual, encoded x-y stage platform with 100mm x 100mm travel.
The SavvyInspector™ model SIF-4M is the motorized version of the popular SIF-4 software assisted scratch-dig system for flat optical surfaces. Joystick controlled motorized x, y and z stages make measurements fast and efficient for high volume parts as well as large, precise parts. It has a motorised z-stage with 70mm of travel and motorised, encoded x-y stage platform with >90mm of travel in each direction.
The SavvyInspector™ model SIF-8M is a 200 mm motorized version of our popular SIF-4 software assisted scratch-dig system for larger flat optical surfaces. Joystick controlled motorized x, y and z stages make measurements fast and efficient for high volume parts as well as large, precise parts.
The SavvyInspector™ can be upscaled for larger optics. Please contact us with your requirements.
SavvyInspector® Software
For manual operation
The SavvyInspector® operator interface is designed for easy factory-floor operation, while expanding its application in the role of “Master Inspector” for QA, QC and MRB decisions. The operator enters the inspection level required, and then uses the x-y stage to locate the desired defect on the real-time viewing screen. Manual focus allows easy measurement set-up. The software reports the scratch grade or dig value automatically. The “always on” inspection mode and programmable grade bars allow the operator to get real-time feedback on whether a selected imperfection is acceptable or not with a simple visual interface. There is no subjectivity; the grade is reported and the grade bar turns red if the imperfection is greater than the specification. When a careful review and documentation of a surface is required, the version software provides data management tools to properly collect and file screen shots and inspection grades for each imperfection on a surface, including a summary log in CSV format for easy uploading into Excel or an inspection report. Custom calibration files can be created for specific project or customer needs by the Quality Engineer as needed.
For motorised operation
The SavvyInspector® SIF Series operator interface for motorised stages provides the following additional features. The operator enters the inspection level required, enters part geometry and size, and then uses the joystick to scan the surface for imperfections using the real-time viewing screen. The “Autoscan” feature creates indexed image files for the entire surface, documenting the condition of the optic and allowing the operator to identify regions on the part which require further review. The coordinates can be entered and the system returns to the desired location with the push of a button. A screen shot of each imperfection can be saved, and the location and type of imperfection are automatically added to the surface map and CSV data file for offline review. Accumulation rules can be applied using the Savvy Accumulator™ spreadsheet, or the SavvyInspector® can do it for you. Optional automation software with customized inspection rules can be used to consistently and completely inspect and document entire components to your requirements.
Instrument Calibration
The SavvyInspector™ software comes from the factory with calibration files based on all the most common and respected comparison standards manufactured by Brysen Optical, Davidson Optronics, and Jenoptik. Savvy Optics Corp has worked with these comparison standard manufacturers to develop these calibration files. Sets of calibration artifacts have been sequestered to guarantee instrument to instrument agreement during the manufacture of each SavvyInspector™.
If the user needs a scratch inspection done to a standard which is not in the factory calibrations library, a custom calibration file can be created. The tool owner just enters the password protected calibration mode, presents the SavvyInspector™ with the desired comparison artifact, and enters the measured visibility into the appropriate data field for that scratch number. The calibration data can then be saved and accessed from the inspection mode. Factory calibration data cannot be over-written.
